Mankato Free Press - Seminar to offer advice on energy savings to cities, schools

MANKATO — Minnesota State University, which was already working in 2014 to reduce its carbon footprint, will be the host of a seminar Thursday advising cities, schools and counties on how to follow suit.

The Southeast Clean Energy Resource Team is sponsoring the event, which will focus on lowering building-related energy expenses.

Representatives of Xcel and BENCO will talk about the energy efficiency resources they make available for public building upgrades. An official from Weidt Group, an energy consultant, will talk about tracking energy use by building, seeing how it compares to similar structures and setting strategies for cutting energy usage and costs.

And MSU will offer a pair of speakers detailing the university’s success in reducing energy use, including a talk by retired physics professor Louis Schwartzkopf. He tracked the results of the university’s 2014 Climate Action Plan, which in its first four years reduced the university’s carbon emissions by nearly 7 percent and reduced waste by 92 percent at a new dining hall.

The event — “Capturing Savings from Public Building Energy Efficiency: Benchmarking, Financing and Getting Your Project Done” — runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Centennial Student Union Room 245. It concludes with an opportunity for one-on-one assistance and guidance on how to move forward with local plans to cut energy costs, along with a tour of the high-efficiency University Dining Center.
